How to boost your wellbeing, in the garden!

Here at Irrigatia, we love nothing more than getting out and being busy in our gardens – we love to see our plants grow, new wildlife making an appearance, and getting some fresh air. But did you know, simply being out in your garden is also a great way to promote positive mental health?

We’ve put together a guide on how your garden can help to boost mental wellbeing, giving you the perfect excuse to make the most of your outdoor space – particularly with plenty of good weather on the horizon throughout the summer!


Enjoy the fresh air

Our first top tip is definitely the easiest one to do, but not to be underestimated! By simply stepping outdoors to take some time in your garden, you’re allowing yourself time to unwind and breathe in some fresh air. Fresh air is vital for refreshing you oxygen supply, and in turn, oxygen will boost your serotonin levels promoting a sense of happiness and relaxation.


Think about your garden scents

Whilst you’re enjoying a spot of fresh air, take your time to enjoy the smells in your garden. Freshly cut grass and the smell of laundry on the line are proven to be relaxing for the mind, but you can also boost your senses through the plants you choose; opt for lavender, roses, lilies and jasmine to boost mental wellbeing through your sense of smell.


Exercise your body, and mind

We all know exercise is a great way to boost your serotonin levels, but did you know gardening count towards your fitness targets? Gardening can burn up to 180 calories per hour, so it’s a great workout. The rhythmic nature of gardening tasks – some personal favourites of the Irrigatia team being picking flowers fruit and vegetables, inspecting plants for pests, rooting out weeds – also help to distract from every day stresses too.

But on top of the physical benefits to your body, don’t forget about exercising your mind too; by reading and learning about the plants in your garden, gardening techniques, and even this blog, you’re keeping your mind active and stimulated!


Get growing

Why not turn your hand to trying new growing projects? Even if you’re a gardening novice, or have the smallest of outdoor spaces, find a spot to plant some seedlings. Nurturing them and watching your plants flourish has been reported to promote a sense of hope and accomplishment – and excellent booster for your mental health!


Consider your colour choices

It’s true that certain colours promote positive mental health more than others, and whilst we’re not saying to completely start afresh in your garden, it’s worth considering the colours of future plant purchases with wellbeing in mind. Use calming colours to help build a tranquil outdoor space, including paler blues and purples, silvers and whites, and plenty of soft greenery.


Appreciate your garden space

After all of your hard work out in the garden, make sure you take the time to enjoy it. Take joy in watching the bees busy away in your flowers, how your borders are flourishing in the sunshine, and how well your vegetable growing project is doing. You’ll find you’re more aware of yourself and your surroundings, and living in the moment too – all key to practising mindfulness.
